#261: LOL!! *snort* Weirdest craving for emeralds… gingham apron, blue hair bow… you guys are shameless!! Wonderfully shameless! Is she wearing ruby elf-boots, too?? :) Excellent comic–and I’m wondering if the Brats have tweaked yet that they’re talking about a Particular Hammer…. :)
“…she made twenty attempts to get that hammer…and failed thirty times.”
Twenty attempts, failed thirty times? Am I missing something here in my understanding of legend, is this simply a mistake on the part of our esteemed authors, or is this foreshadowing for something we’ve yet to understand?
Comment by Bruce C. Miller — February 1, 2008 @ 12:43 pm
yea, I saw that Wizard of OZ reference there right away, although the ‘wierd emerald craving’ threw me off for a few seconds.
Jasta: episode 261. Check the initials of the catalog. :)
And Xyle: thanks! I don’t think I woulda noticed that (yet anyway) if you hadn’t mentioned it. :) good old ACME :)
@EdorFaus: Oh, that was diabolically clever in its subtlety… Xyle, that was one GOOD catch! :) And Thor dear… maybe you should learn to listen. :) That’s your Dad’s genetics workin’ there… Don’t forget to vote everyone!
I’m a little confused here, did the fight already happen in the last panel or was it just that Thor got swatted to the ground in the last panel and they hadn’t actually fought yet?
Anyways, Thor is pretty much an expert on battling trolls, although these guys may be somewhat different from the ones he usually fights back home.
@Xyle - Just wanted to thank you for catching the ACME reference. Since we were doing a Looney Toons type of scene with Xarenia trying to catch Mjollnir, I wanted to give a subtle, little nod to what inspired the scene. I was a little worried it might be too subtle, but then I was reminded we have a lot of smart readers. ^_^
@smjjames - The fight will last for 4 more episodes, so no, it hasn’t really begun yet. In #262, Thor’s just lying there after his landing from that first swatting.
Comment by Jeffery Stevenson — February 7, 2008 @ 11:43 am
#263: As Scooby-Doo might say, Ruh-roh…. Looks like Thor didn’t think QUITE far enough ahead! :) The calm, kind explanation sounds like something Hod might’ve said, if he were present… :) (Why yes, Jasta has a one-track mind… *grins*)
I’m just wondering, how come the comments are down on the main page?

Episode 263: Heh, I think the pookah is a wee bit smarter than Thor. Look at that expression in panel 4, he’s waiting for the other shoe to drop *grin* .
@ AVESTRIEL:
That’s not an Alice-ish dress. It’s Dorothy’s dress from “The Wizard of Oz.” The strip is alluding to “The Wizard of Oz” by L. Frank Baum, hence also, the references to weird dreams and craving emeralds.
But I’m fairly certain Jeff could work in an allusion to “Alice in Wonderland” if he wanted to do so. He certainly has enough female characters appearing currently in the strip to make allusions to any book with strong female characters that he wants to… even “Little Women.”
@Jeff:
Nice allusions! Loved the nod to “Looney Toons” as well. I love “Brat-halla” soooo much!!

I have not seen anyone comment on this yet. It appears that the pooka has chosen a new “best friend”. Thor cannot see it any more.
And I also think that the line “imaginary friends with benefits” is inspired.
Comment by Mark Sebree — February 13, 2008 @ 12:39 pm
@Mark Sebree - Take a close look at the previous strips… it’s subtle, but Thor’s never really been able to see the Pookah. He thought he did once when he was practically asleep, but that was it. ^_^

#264: LOL! Pookah shoots, he scores, WIN! :) Poor Loki, when will he EVER learn that the moment you open your yap to make a crack someone WILL hurt you?? :) Well, unless you’re Hod, of course, who is apparently covered in Teflon… LOL! Pookie almost looks cute there with Herself fondling his head…. :) Great page, guys!
ha!, read carefully what Xenia says, I bet since Arazael (sp?) uses magic, she has an ability to see or sense magical biengs. So maybe she has seen the Pookah all along and just chose not to pay much attention.
It is possible that Thor sort of saw him in a dream state, or an otherwise half asleep state. or it could be Thor bieng thickheaded as he is known for.
Still doesn’t really explain why the others haven’t noticed the Pookah yet.
Also, I haven’t noticed that scar on the Pookah’s eye before, apparently he has had it from the start a couple strips back. I don’t remember him having it from earlier. unless the strips were touched up to include the scar. Anyways, it looks like the Pookah has been in at least one fight before.
Comment by smjjames — February 13, 2008 @ 10:58 pm
@ smjjames: The scar’s been there the whole time. When I first saw an orange tinted cat with a scar over its eye I asked Jeff if he was paying homage to Scarborough our old cat. He said no. Apparently, Seth was paying homage to his wife’s cat.

Man, I’m sorry for this, but what is going on with you guys? I haven’t kept track, but for some while now the art really started to get sleazy and lazy. Once again we have a comic with some 4 or more panels with the very same picture with only minimal or mild differences drawn over the previous panel. Remember #264? The fighting sequence on the top 2 panels didn’t even change a bit, just some faces changed and some speech balloons were added. That is just one example between many others. Just check the recent archives. And I also see a bit of unorganization on the panels. As if the order of them doesn’t really follow what you really meant to happen. But this last one may just be me.
Come on, we all know you can do better than this! Is this a consequence of drawing more than one comic?
@Ronaldo - No need to be sorry for it at all. You made a valid and constructive criticism, which is very useful. Feedback like yours helps us make this comic better for all of the readers. Hearing the specifics of what our loyal readers like (and don’t like) really is important to us.
This specific one though (#269) is all on me as the writer. I wrote it this way to focus on Thor just lying there in shock (to help highlight all the little gags the Pookah was doing like him making a “waste angel” and unzipping and pulling off his dirty fur). And I really want to say “Thanks” for taking the time to point out your concerns. And doing so in a way where you’re letting us know exactly what you’re seeing in a constructive manner, so we can be aware of it in future episodes. It really does help us get better as creators.

I wonder if this is a D&D reference because I have this book that lists all sorts of D&D monsters (never played D&D though, just thought the book was interesting when I bought it) and there is a type of slime that is often used to clean dungeons and all. It may just be a coincidence, although I think someone may have mentioned D&D a long while ago and is probably on the archived old comments board.
#270: LOL… “It’s Midgard, it’s all odd…” You know, there are just some days…. Speaking of D&D, did you all hear that Gary Gygax passed away? The guy without whom none of us old geeks would have had ANY social life? I hope he’s feasting with Hel and the gang even now… *sighs*
@smjjames - Yep, this creature is a sentient form of the Gelatinous Cube from good ol’ D&D. We also did a sentient female blob in our “Horror’s Next Top Model” storyline with our old Spook’d webcomic. We like-a da blobs. ^_^
@JastaElf - Yeah, I heard the news that Gygax passed away yesterday. :( D&D was a big part of my life growing up, and you’ll see elements of it in a lot of my works. None more so than in the short comic I did with Ryan Ottley (artist on Image’s Invincible) called Dungeon Bears. RIP, Gary.

RIP, Gary.
